Cosa mangi a Siracusa?

OUR SELECTION ON WHERE AND WHAT TO EAT IN SYRACUSE Ortigia MarketIf you visit the island of Ortigia, a fundamental stop is represented by the folkloric market stalls, where the vendors describe their products singing lullabies in the local dialect. Among the stalls you can admire and buy food and local products such as vegetables, meat, dairy products, legumes and above all fish, shellfish and fish products. The stalls, the neighboring shops and the so-called “Vanniate” (shouts) take tourists into an atmosphere far from today’s cold modernity. In a period in which the products were really genuine and were sold to people who, attracted by the shouts, were running to buy the food that the earth or the sea had given to those who worked hard to feed their families. In this market and in many other markets in the aretusea province this happens up to today. The sandwich from Caseificio BorderiWhat to expect from a visit to Caseificio Borderi? A Sicilian cheese and sandwich deli hailed the best in world. When visiting Ortigia, you’ll likely come across Caseificio Borderi. Located in the local market, this humble looking deli is renowned for its homemade cheeses — the hero ingredient of its made-to-order sandwiches that regularly rate among Sicily’s top food offerings. Head to the deli at lunch time and you’ll likely see a handful of staff rushing around prepping ingredients and serving the lucky few who have managed to score a table. Those who speak English occasionally field queries from confused tourists who wait in line, assuring them it moves quickly. There’s a ticketing system but don’t be surprised if it’s only loosely observed (welcome to Sicily). The deli is owned by Andrea and Gaetano Borderi, the son and grandson of Don Pasquale Borderi who first founded the family business. A large part of the deli’s success is due to the owners’ penchant for turning the simple act of making a sandwich into a theatrical spectacle. It’s not uncommon for customers to cheer as they’re handed their orders, having often happily waited around two hours in line just for this moment. There’s no real ordering process; at best, you’ll simply be asked if there are any ingredients you don’t enjoy. From there several sandwichesare made at once, with everything chopped or sliced to serve. Each one is carefully layered by either Andrea or Gaetano with sundried tomatoes, lettuce, herbs, lemon juice, an entire ball of freshly-made buffalo mozzarella, ricotta, garlic paste, onion jam, eggplant, mushrooms and ham wrapped in provolone. There’s an artistic flair to the process, so not every sandwich is exactly the same. Pesto, prosciutto, salami, olives, pecorino and Ragusano (cow’s-milk cheese produced in Ragusa, Sicily) are some of the other ingredients regularly used. Each sandwich can easily be shared between two people. Fratelli BurgioThere was a historical moment in which the Sicilian cultural landscape underwent upheavals that risked losing its traditions and flavours. It is then that the history of the Burgio family begins. It all starts from the delicatessen founded in 1978 by Pippo Burgio, father of the Burgio Brothers. Here for the past three generations the pleasure and the art of serving not only cured meats, but also preparations and preserves that belong to the Sicilian culinary tradition and risked being forgotten have been handed down. The challenge was and still is to recover the lost flavors of the past, from the extremely high quality raw material to its rigorously artisanal processing. In fact, the Burgios believe that the products must return to the tables with all the wealth of experience, wisdom and taste that have enriched them throughout history. Their Conserva di Caponata has conquered the palate and heart of many, so much so that it has been awarded as the best artisan preserve, both in Italy and abroad.Nuova DolceriaFranco Manuele was more or less fourteen years old when his father, owner of a small pastry shop in Ferla, inspired him to take an interest in the family business. It was the eighties and the pastry shop was little more than a kitchen: a marble table, a sink, an oven and a mixer, the ones usually used by housewives. Barely twenty years old, he decided to embark on a new path, made up of study, research, experimentation. He spent a lot of time, at the end of the day, looking at the windows with his products of the day. He is still pleased with the work done even though he is not completely satisfied with it. This drives him to seek innovation with the love, passion and dedication that has always distinguished Nuova Dolceria. If you would like to try the best Cannolo in town you should try the one that “Nuova Dolceria” makes. We absolutely recommend also the cakes, and icecreams they make, they are yummy! Pizzeria Oleum
Oleum is a culinary and gastronomic journey, a meeting of tastes, flavors, smells and above all emotions and people. Pizza is not just a dough to which you add ingredients: it is careful research, passion, effort and love. They make the best pizza dough in town with top quality ingredients that will absolutely change your concept of pizza. ApollonionWe absolutely recommend Apollonion if you’d like a taste of fresh daily fish. They offer a tasting menu of the catch of the day. Value for money to the table with attention and care, to return a genuine expression of the local culinary tradition.Kindness and courtesy do the rest. Our card offers a selection of Sicilian wines. The menu varies from marinated fish to soups, from fries to recipes with fish and ending with pasta. Caffè ApolloCaffè Apollo is a café that combines the mastery of Sicilian pastry with the delicacy of an ice cream. Once inside, you will be overwhelmed by the heady and unmistakable scent of our rotisserie and snack bar for quick and always appetizing lunches.Tasting the real taste of Sicily will be a pleasure for you! Il mare di Siracusa

The coast of the province of Syracuse is one of the most evocative stretches of coast in Sicily, thanks to its succession of pristine white beaches, golden bays, promontories, islets and breathtaking landscapes. The presence of protected areas has allowed the development of a rich biodiversity sea and land and, at the same time, to preserve the archaeological remains of a past linked to the sea, from Greek civilization to the more recent industrial era. It is the ideal place for those who want to rediscover the pleasure of being in contact with nature and in fascinating landscapes where the sea, nature and history intertwine to create a small corner of paradise. Fontane Bianche This beach is located 16 km from Syracuse, along the eastern coast of Sicily, and owes its name to the numerous fresh water springs that flow from the seabed. The splendid beach of fine white sand, which extends for about 3 km, is lapped by a blue and transparent sea with shallow waters. These characteristics make Fontane Bianche one of the most fascinating beaches in south-eastern Sicily. The coast offers, in addition to stretches of free beach, several areas equipped with bars and bathing establishments, some of which offer pedal boat and canoe rental services. You can also practice different types of water sports. The surrounding area is well served by bars, restaurants, supermarkets, discos, tennis and soccer fields. During the high season the locality could be on average crowded, but the extension of the beach allows you to enjoy its splendid sea in complete tranquillity. Ognina This stretch of coast that goes from Fontane Bianche to the beach of Arenella, located in eastern Sicily about 13 km from Syracuse, is an alternation of rocky cliffs overlooking the sea, white sandy coves, caves and marine cavities lapped by crystal clear waters. A little further out there is a deserted islet that can also be reached by swimming. Alongside the natural beauty of this cliff there is a bay that houses a small port. The Ognina area is also an interesting archaeological site due to the numerous testimonies ranging from the prehistoric age to the late antiquity. A truly enchanting location where you can enjoy a clear sea, snorkel and immerse yourself in a fascinating nature. Arenella This large stretch of golden sand extends along a bay that ends in a rocky promontory, about 10 km from Syracuse on the east coast of Sicily. Arenella beach is suitable both for those who love the tranquility of the free beach and for those who do not want to give up the comforts of the services offered by the various bathing establishments and bars located along the coast. It also offers convenient parking nearby. Since the stretch of free beach is not very extensive, the beach could be crowded during the high season, so to fully enjoy this crystalline sea it is advisable to go to the place if possible during the low season. Instead, for those who love rocks, Arenella also offers a rocky stretch north of the beach. Riserva Naturale del Plemmirio The Maddalena Peninsula, which is located within the Plemmirio Nature Reserve, is located south of the island of Ortigia and offers several small beaches and beautiful cliffs. The reserve is located along the eastern coast of Sicily just 10 km from Syracuse. Its waters, ranging from emerald green to turquoise at the deepest points, host a rich and suggestive marine biodiversity among fascinating caves, ideal for those who love to practice scuba diving. Among the most beautiful we find the Plemmirio and Capo Meli caves, as well as marine cavities and rock formations, such as the Archi and the Lingua del Gigante. Among the coves there are several coves and small beaches. La Fanusa is an unspoilt golden sand beach, immediately after which you come across the Costa Bianca, a rocky area with crystalline sea. The richness of marine and terrestrial biodiversity make the Plemmirio area the ideal place for hiking and scuba diving enthusiasts. The area has become a protected oasis since 2005, the year in which the Plemmirio Marine Protected Area was established, which extends along a 15 km perimeter of coast. A diversified Mediterranean flora develops along the rocky coast, mainly made up of dwarf palms and thyme plants in the area closest to the sea, while saffron plants, carob trees, myrtle plants and dwarf palms grow in the driest part. Minareto This small beach of clear sand and crystalline sea, whose shallow waters are rich in posidonia, is located within the Plemmirio Protected Area, in front of Ortigia, on the eastern coast of Sicily and a few kilometers from Syracuse. Only part of the beach is freely accessible, as the remaining half belongs to a hotel which guarantees access for the disabled and offers the rental of deck chairs and umbrellas. It is sheltered by high rocky cliffs and is accessed via a stairway carved into the rock, from which a path runs along the entire northern stretch of the reserve up to the Capo Murro di Porco lighthouse. Faro Massolivieri The Massolivieri Lighthouse beach is one of the small sandy coves located within the Plemmirio Marine Protected Area, along the eastern coast of Sicily and just 10 km from Syracuse. It fascinates for its clear and uncontaminated waters. The cove is made up of grainy golden sand and rocks, ideal for those who want to seclude themselves in a small corner of paradise with crystal clear waters.Next to the bay is the “Grotta della Pillirina” (“Pilgrim Cave”), place of a sad love legend: two lovers meet every night in this cave, but their bond is opposed by the girl’s noble parents who oppose a marriage with a simple sailor. For several nights the woman waits for her man who never reappears, so she, destroyed by pain, decides to throw herself off the cliff. 10 attrazioni imperdibili a Siracusa

Visiting Syracuse means taking a journey back in history, discovering a thousand-year-old city whose origins date back to the distant past but which remains eternally splendid in our eyes. Let’s discover the ten unmissable attractions of Syracuse. It holds testimonies from various eras, from protohistory to late antiquity and the Byzantine Empire. The Greek Theater of Syracuse is one of the largest in the world, entirely carved into the rock. In ancient times it was used for shows and popular assemblies, but today it is the place where Greek tragedy is relived through the Cycle of Classical Performances that takes place every year. At sunset, and perhaps even under the full moon, we can have a unique experience here on the steps of the Greek Theater. It is so called because of its ear-like shape, and especially because of its exceptional acoustic properties that amplify sounds from within. According to legend, the tyrant Dionysus kept his captives here and secretly listened to their discussions. It is an artificial cave located under the Greek Theater, in the ancient stone quarry known as Latomia del Paradiso. Hieron’s Altar – The second monument you will come across, on your left, is a large rectangular platform. These are the ruins of the Altar of Hieron, the largest stone altar built in the Greek world. It was dedicated to Zeus ‘eleutherios’. Latomia del Paradiso – The stone quarry of Paradise – Behind the theater you will enter a wonderful garden. This is the paradise latomia, the stone quarry of Paradise. In ancient times it had a very different appearance and was a place of work and a prison for slaves. Today it is a beautiful garden with vegetation composed of Mediterranean and exotic plants: orange and lemon trees but also palms and ficuses. Inside the quarry it is also possible to see some caves. One of these is the ‘Grotta dei cordari’ because the guild of craftsmen has worked here for centuries. Latomia di Santa Venera – Starting from July 2021 new areas of the Neapolis Park are open to visitors (but not all year round). So during the summer months it is also possible to visit the interior of the Cordari cave and the Saltpeter cave and it is possible to take a walk through the stone quarry of Santa Venera, admire a gigantic ficus tree and arrive at an ancient Roman tomb , called the ‘Tomb of Archimedes’. The Cathedral is an exceptional case of a pagan temple and a Christian church at the same time: it stands on the ruins of a temple dedicated to Athena built in 480 BC, and hides behind the baroque style of the facade, with the Doric columns still visible both outside and inside, a jewel of the past. At the end of the square, the Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia hosts “The Burial of Saint Lucia”, a timeless masterpiece by Caravaggio during his stay in Sicily, depicting the martyrdom of the patron saint of Syracuse. Castello Maniace: Castello Maniace takes its name from the Byzantine leader Giorgio Maniace. A true symbol of the power and genius of Emperor Frederick II, who had it built on an ancient fortress between 1232 and 1240. Immersed in the colors of the sea, it is the extreme edge of the island of Ortigia. Eurialo Castle: the Eurialo Castle is one of the largest and most complete military works of the Greek period. It was built at the behest of Dionysius I, tyrant of Syracuse, to complete the grandiose defensive system known as the Dionysian Walls, which ran along the entire edge of the Epipoli plateau. Walking among the ruins seems to go back in time and hear the sound of the soldiers’ sandals. During the celebrations in honor of Santa Lucia, one of the most emotional moments is the fireworks salute to her patron saint upon her arrival at Ponte Umbertino, before she resumes her journey towards the Cathedral, where she will once again enter her chapel .
